Robert Budi Hartono's net worth was put at $15.7 billion by Forbes' Real-Time Billionaires tracker on 2 August 2026, ranking him 184th in the world, according to Indonesian outlet idxchannel.com. The same report cited Bloomberg's estimate for him at $19.9 billion, also as of 2 August 2026. Same person, the same day, a $4.2 billion gap, roughly 27%, between two trackers pricing a fortune anchored in a bank whose shares trade on the Indonesia Stock Exchange every day.
The figures landed days after a real, dated corporate event: on 29 July 2026, per a letter from Indonesia's Financial Services Authority (OJK) reported by Kompas, Detik and Liputan6 on 3 August 2026, Robert Budi Hartono became the sole controlling shareholder (Pemegang Saham Pengendali Terakhir) of PT Bank Central Asia Tbk, following the death of his older brother, Michael Bambang Hartono, on 19 March 2026 (Antara, US News).
Some secondary coverage frames the BCA ownership change as Robert Budi Hartono "becoming Indonesia's richest person." That claim does not hold up against the index it would need to.
Per the Bloomberg Billionaires Index's own Indonesia ranking as of 31 July 2026 (Bloomberg Technoz, republished by RRI.co.id), he sat 4th nationally at roughly Rp270.15 trillion, behind Sukanto Tanoto (1st, ~Rp423.23 trillion), Prajogo Pangestu (2nd, ~Rp333.18 trillion), and Low Tuck Kwong (3rd, ~Rp298.96 trillion). Becoming BCA's sole controlling shareholder is a governance fact, confirmed by a regulator with a specific letter date. Becoming Indonesia's richest person is a separate, ranking-dependent claim, and Bloomberg's own numbers from two days before the ownership change was reported do not support it.
Almost all of it runs through one holding company. PT Dwimuria Investama Andalan (DIA), a private holding vehicle, owns 54.942% of BBCA, per BCA's own disclosure of its controlling shareholder structure. Until March 2026, Robert Budi Hartono and Michael Bambang Hartono jointly controlled DIA. After Michael's death, DIA's shares were reassigned so that Robert Budi Hartono now holds 51% of DIA's paid-in and issued capital, making him DIA's sole controller and, through it, BCA's.
The rest of the family fortune sits in Djarum, the kretek cigarette maker their father, Oei Wie Gwan, founded, which has no listed share price at all. BCA is what makes this fortune trackable in the first place; Djarum is why it can never be pinned down exactly.

More knowable than a fully private conglomerate, less knowable than it looks.
BBCA itself is about as transparent as an asset gets: a large-cap bank on the Indonesia Stock Exchange with a share price set every trading day. That is why Robert Budi Hartono's Forbes-Bloomberg gap, at roughly 27%, is far narrower than Sukanto Tanoto's, whose fortune sits in a wholly private industrial group and swung six-fold between the same two trackers in July 2026. The mechanism that keeps the gap open here is one layer up: DIA itself is privately held, so trackers still have to estimate how much of DIA's BCA stake, and what discount for control and illiquidity, belongs to Robert Budi Hartono personally. Mark Zuckerberg's dual-class Meta shares are a different version of the same idea: a public, disclosed stock where the number that matters most for control isn't the one printed next to the ticker.
Two things, and neither requires a view on Indonesian banking.
A headline about who controls a company is not automatically a headline about who is richest. OJK confirmed a governance fact with a letter date. Whether that also makes someone a country's wealthiest person depends on which tracker, which date, and who else moved that week. Check the ranking claim against the index it names before repeating it.
A death in a two-person holding structure can jump a wealth ranking without a single market move. Nothing here implies anything about how the Hartono family handled the transition; the OJK filing and the DIA share reassignment are both public record. It is simply a reminder that succession, not performance, sometimes decides who tops a list. If your own portfolio is concentrated in one or two positions, NetWort's asset pages and market page track the daily pricing your holdings actually get, without needing a regulator's letter to tell you who owns what.
