Antam or UBS? The Gold Brand You Buy Changes What You Get Back at Resale

You are standing at a gold counter with two boxes in front of you. One says Antam, the name every Indonesian gold buyer already recognizes. The other says UBS, usually a little cheaper to buy. Picking one over the other does not just change what you pay today. It changes what you get back the day you decide to sell.
That gap between buying price and selling-back price is called the spread, and it is not the same size for every gold brand. Here is what it actually was today, in rupiah, and why it is not random.
When you sell gold back to the place you bought it, you do not get the same price you paid. The dealer offers you a lower price, called the buyback price (harga buyback, sometimes written harga jual kembali). The gap between what you paid and what you get back is the spread.
Every gold brand has a spread. The question that actually matters for your wallet is how big it is, and that is where Antam and UBS start to look different.
Here is what a 1-gram bar of each brand cost to buy and sell back on 27 August 2026, according to Antam's own daily price release (via Vibiznews and Disway) and Galeri 24's official price list (via Kontan's MomsMoney and Pintu News), Pegadaian's precious-metals retail arm that sells both Antam and UBS bars alongside its own house brand:
| Brand | Buy price | Buyback price | Spread | Spread as % of buy price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Antam | Rp2,723,000 | Rp2,583,000 | Rp140,000 | 5.1% |
| UBS | Rp2,754,000 | Rp2,519,000 | Rp235,000 | 8.5% |
| Galeri 24 (house brand) | Rp2,681,000 | Rp2,531,000 | Rp150,000 | 5.6% |
Notice that UBS was actually cheaper to buy than Antam that day, Rp2,754,000 against Rp2,723,000 is close, but its buyback price was the lowest of the three. That combination is what makes its spread nearly 70% wider than Antam's, in rupiah terms.
Antam is short for PT Aneka Tambang, a state-owned mining company, and its gold bars are produced and certified under its Logam Mulia unit. That state backing and decades of brand recognition make Antam bars the most liquid gold product in Indonesia. Nearly every pawnshop, gold shop and marketplace will buy one back without hesitation, and that liquidity is exactly what keeps its spread tight.
UBS is not the Swiss bank most people assume from the name. It is short for PT Untung Bersama Sejahtera, a private gold and jewellery producer founded in Surabaya in 1975. UBS bars are certified and carry their own serial numbers, but the brand does not carry the same nationwide buyback confidence Antam does, so dealers price in a wider margin to protect themselves against the resale risk.
Kontan's MomsMoney desk tracks buyback spreads across Indonesia's major gold brands on an ongoing basis, and its reporting has repeatedly found the same pattern: Pegadaian and Galeri 24 tend to post the narrowest spreads, while UBS is flagged as carrying the widest spread among the brands it monitors, even on days when the gap across all brands is narrowing overall. Today's numbers above are one snapshot of a pattern that shows up again and again in that tracking, not a one-off.
Buy 1 gram of each brand today and sell it back the same day, with the world gold price unchanged, and here is what you would actually lose:
That gap only matters if you might need to sell soon. If you are holding gold for years, the spread you pay on day one is a small, one-time cost next to how much the gold price itself moves over that time. But if there is any real chance you will need the cash back within months, for example if you are weighing gadai emas as an alternative to selling outright, the size of the spread is worth checking before you pick a brand, not after.
Whichever brand you hold, its resale value changes every day along with the gold price, not just the spread. NetWort tracks gold as its own holding type alongside your stocks and crypto, updated against live prices, so you always know what your gram is worth today rather than guessing from the price you paid. If you are also weighing physical gold against a digital gold app, see how the spread compares across formats before you decide. Open your Holdings page to add what you already own.
