BI's Benchmark Rate Isn't One Number. It's the Middle of a Corridor With Two Other Rates Either Side

Every month, the headline says the same thing: "BI holds its rate at 5.75%." One number. But if you have ever wondered why your bank pays you far less than 5.75% on a savings account while charging you far more than that on a personal loan, the headline is only telling you a third of the story. Bank Indonesia does not manage one rate. It manages three, at once, and the one you hear about is deliberately kept in the middle.
The number in the headline is the BI 7-Day Reverse Repo Rate, usually shortened to BI7DRR or just "the BI Rate." It is Bank Indonesia's main policy rate, the one it sets at its monthly Board of Governors meeting and the one every news report leads with.
Around that single number, Bank Indonesia sets two more rates that box it in from above and below. Together, all three form what is called the BI Rate corridor:
Deposit Facility and Lending Facility are not products you or I can walk into a bank and open. They are standing facilities open only to commercial banks, for parking or borrowing money with Bank Indonesia itself, usually overnight.
The rate that actually trades between banks every night, called the interbank overnight rate, is squeezed between these two. Since 1 January 2026, Indonesia tracks that overnight rate with a new benchmark called INDONIA (Indonesia Overnight Index Average), which replaced the older JIBOR. Unlike JIBOR, which was based on rates banks merely quoted, INDONIA is calculated from real, executed overnight lending transactions between banks, which makes it a more honest read of where money actually changes hands overnight.
At its Board of Governors meeting on 18 to 19 August 2026, Bank Indonesia held all three rates steady:
| Rate | Level | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit Facility | 4.75% | Floor |
| BI Rate (BI7DRR) | 5.75% | Policy target |
| Lending Facility | 6.50% | Ceiling |

Notice the gap is not the same size on both sides. The Deposit Facility sits 1.00 percentage point below the BI Rate, while the Lending Facility sits only 0.75 percentage point above it. The corridor is 1.75 percentage points wide in total, but it is not centered evenly around the middle rate. This holding decision followed a cumulative 100 basis points of hikes to the BI Rate since May 2026 (a basis point is one hundredth of a percent), part of Bank Indonesia's response to rupiah pressure and elevated global market volatility through the year.
The corridor itself is not fixed forever. Bank Indonesia redesigned it on 19 August 2016, when it formally adopted the BI7DRR as its main policy rate in place of the older BI Rate framework. Before that reform, the corridor spanned 250 basis points. The 2016 redesign narrowed it to 150 basis points, specifically to stop the overnight interbank rate from drifting too far from the policy target and to make Bank Indonesia's signal to the market sharper.
This corridor is upstream of the numbers you actually see on a bank statement. When Bank Indonesia moves the BI Rate, and by extension the floor and ceiling around it, banks reprice their own deposit and lending products in response, though rarely by the same amount or at the same speed. A bank like Bank Central Asia (BBCA), one of the largest deposit takers on the exchange, sets its own savings and time deposit rates with this corridor as a backdrop, not a rulebook it must copy exactly.
That is also why your savings account rate can sit well below the BI Rate while a personal loan or credit card rate sits well above it. Banks are not required to pass the BI Rate through to you one for one. The corridor sets the boundaries the overnight interbank market trades within. What you personally get quoted still depends on your own bank's funding needs, competition and risk pricing.
If you hold rupiah-denominated savings, bonds or IDX stocks sensitive to interest rates, the BI Rate corridor is one of the clearest signals of how tight or loose monetary policy currently is, and how much room Bank Indonesia has left to move in either direction. NetWort's Macro Context page tracks the BI Rate alongside the rupiah exchange rate and inflation, so you can see the full policy picture in one place rather than reacting to a single headline number.
