Bank Indonesia's Rate Decision in Plain Words: Who Votes, What They Look At, and When to Expect It

You wake up, open the news, and see: "BI holds its rate at 5.75%." Your mortgage, your deposit and your stocks all feel it somehow. But who actually made that call? And when is the next one?
This is how Bank Indonesia sets its interest rate, step by step, in plain words. The next decision is due on 21 October 2026.
The BI-Rate is Bank Indonesia's main interest rate. Banks use it as a signal for what to charge and pay.
The decision is made by the Board of Governors. In Indonesian it is called the Rapat Dewan Gubernur, or RDG. Under the 2004 Bank Indonesia law, as quoted in 2013 news reports, the board is one Governor, one Senior Deputy Governor, and four to seven Deputy Governors (Bisnis.com, via search summary). Later laws may have changed the details, and we could not confirm the current headcount.
We also could not find a public rule on how votes are counted. So we will not guess. What is clear is that a minister who attends for the government may speak but has no vote, according to a statement by the Governor (search summary).
Check the current board on the Bank Indonesia website before you quote any of this.
At least once a month. The law requires it, under Article 43 of Law 23 of 1999 (search summary).
Each meeting runs two days in a row, and the two days count as one meeting. Day one reviews the economy and the financial system. Day two sets the policy. The Governor holds a press conference on day two, so the rate news lands that afternoon (search summaries of BI's schedule release).
Bank Indonesia published the full 2026 schedule in a press release on 22 December 2025. Here it is, as listed by Infobanknews and BCA Sekuritas (search summaries, retrieved 14 October 2026):
| Month | Meeting days | Note |
|---|---|---|
| January | 20 to 21 | Quarterly |
| February | 18 to 19 | |
| March | 16 to 17 | |
| April | 21 to 22 | Quarterly |
| May | 19 to 20 | |
| June | 17 to 18 | |
| July | 21 to 22 | Quarterly |
| August | 18 to 19 | |
| September | 22 to 23 | |
| October | 20 to 21 | Quarterly and annual |
| November | 17 to 18 | |
| December | 15 to 16 |
"Quarterly" meetings also review the bigger picture for the quarter. The rate is announced on the second day. For October, that is 21 October 2026. Dates can change, so confirm on the Bank Indonesia website.
Bank Indonesia says its rate settings aim to keep inflation inside a target band of 2.5%, give or take 1 point, for 2026 and 2027 (Bisnis.com and Investortrust, via search summaries). Inflation is how fast prices rise.
The September 2026 decision shows the checklist in action. Reports named these items:
In short, the board looks at three things: how fast prices rise, how steady the rupiah is, and how the world around Indonesia is moving. Growth matters too, but in 2026 reports put the rupiah first.
When the news says "5.75%," it hides two other rates. At the September 2026 meeting, the Deposit Facility was 4.75% and the Lending Facility was 6.50% (Bisnis.com, via search summary).
Think of a hallway. The BI-Rate is the middle. The Deposit Facility is the floor: what banks earn parking spare cash at BI. The Lending Facility is the ceiling: what banks pay to borrow from BI overnight. Our post on the BI rate corridor explains this in full.
Here is a short timeline. The details between February and September conflict across sources, so we show only what they agree on.
We could not pin down the exact month of each step up, so we do not list them.
The math below is NetWort's own, and the loan is made up.
Say you have a floating-rate loan of Rp500 million. If your bank passed on a full 0.25-point rise:
That is the most it could add, and in real life it rarely happens at once. Banks often change lending rates slowly. Our post on the lag between the BI-Rate and bank loan rates shows why. For stocks, see how rate changes have affected shares in what a BI rate cut does to the stock market.
Open the NetWort Macro Context page and look at the BI-Rate and the rupiah line. Then put 21 October in your calendar and compare the decision with what you saw there.
