Cattle Investment With Profit Sharing: How the Deal Works and the Red Flags to Check

Someone you trust says: "Give me Rp20 million. I will buy a cow, feed it, sell it, and we split the profit." It sounds simple. Cows are real. You can see them. But cattle investment with profit sharing is also a classic cover for scams.
This guide shows how an honest deal is built, what can go wrong, and which checks to run before you send any money.
In a normal deal, you are the investor. You put in the money. The farmer does the work. The money buys a young animal, called a bakalan (a calf or young bull bought to fatten up).
The farmer feeds and houses it for a few months. Then the animal is sold at a higher weight. The profit is split by a ratio you agree on at the start, such as 60% for you and 40% for the farmer. That is what bagi hasil means: sharing the result, not a fixed payment.
The key word is result. If the animal sells well, you earn. If it sells badly, you earn less. If it dies, someone loses money.
This is NetWort arithmetic with made-up numbers, not a real offer.
| Sale price | Profit (sale minus Rp23 million) | Your 60% |
|---|---|---|
| Rp26.000.000 | Rp3.000.000 | Rp1.800.000 |
| Rp23.000.000 | Rp0 | Rp0 |
| Rp19.000.000 | a loss of Rp4.000.000 | a loss, the contract decides who pays |
In the good case, you earn Rp1,8 million on Rp20 million in four months. That is 9%. In the middle case you earn nothing for four months. In the bad case, you may lose part of your capital.
A real deal has this shape: profits that move up and down, and a contract that says who carries a loss.
Now compare a different pitch: "Put in Rp20 million and receive Rp1 million every month, guaranteed."
Do the math. Rp1 million on Rp20 million is 5% every month. Over 12 months that is 60% a year, with no risk. Cattle do not work like that. Feed prices, disease and the beef price all change.
Indonesia's Ministry of Agriculture said in April 2026 that the price of young cattle had risen sharply, and one trade body said it had gone from about Rp47.000 to 48.000 per kg to Rp55.000 per kg of live weight (Bisnis.com, via search summary). Costs move. A promise that never moves is not a farm. It is a story.
OJK's anti-scam task force (Satgas PASTI, formerly the Investment Alert Task Force) lists the same warning signs again and again: unreasonable returns in a short time, "no risk" claims and unclear legal status. Bonuses for bringing in new members are another sign (Bisnis.com, via search summary).
In 2020, police in East Java investigated CV Tri Manunggal Jaya in Ponorogo. It sold dairy cattle fattening packages door to door, priced at about Rp19 million each. The promise was monthly profit from milk sales for three years. The case came to light when payments stopped (Beritajatim, via search summary).
Reports on the case disagree on the numbers, including how many people lost money, so we do not repeat any total here. The lesson does not need a total. The investors paid for a package, were promised a steady monthly payout, and found out only when the payout stopped.
This is one old case, not a verdict on cattle investing. The status of the case today was not checked.
OJK's simple rule is 2L: Legal and Logis (legal and logical). Legal means the party has a proper license. Logical means the return makes sense. Here is how to apply it before you pay:
If something looks wrong, you can report it to OJK on 157 or through the Satgas PASTI channel at sipasti.ojk.go.id.
Ask what you are really after. If it is the farm business, a small, written, visited deal with someone you can hold accountable is one thing. If it is "a steady payout", treat that as the warning sign above.
Whatever you choose, do not put in money you cannot afford to lose. Keep it small and write down the date, amount and terms.
Whatever you put in, record it. Open your NetWort holdings, add the cattle deal as a manual asset at the amount you paid, and set a reminder for the sale date. If the payout is late or smaller than the contract says, you will see it in numbers and not just in memory.
