Buying Gold in Installments Sounds Free. The Admin Fees Say Otherwise

A whole gram of gold costs over two and a half million rupiah right now, more than a lot of people can put down in one go. So Pegadaian and several banks sell it a different way: cicil emas, buying gold on a monthly installment plan, sometimes advertised with a "0% bunga" (0% interest) tagline. That tagline is technically true and still misleading. There is no interest, because the product is not a loan, it is a sale with a fee built in. Here is what that fee actually is, with a real number attached.
Cicil emas is not a loan against gold you already own, that product is called gadai emas and works completely differently (see how gadai emas pricing works here). Cicil emas is a purchase. Pegadaian (or a bank offering the same product) agrees to sell you gold today at today's price, you pay a down payment now, and you pay the rest in fixed monthly installments over a term called a tenor.
The contract behind it is called akad murabahah, a Sharia sale agreement where the seller states its cost and its profit margin upfront rather than charging interest on a loan. You only receive the physical, certified gold once you finish paying. Miss the plan entirely and the gold is not yours, which is the trade off for not needing the full price today.
Three numbers determine the real cost, and none of them is called "interest":
Mu'nah is the part that actually functions like a financing cost, even though Sharia rules mean it cannot be labeled as interest. It is charged on the gold's full appraised value each month, not on your shrinking remaining balance, which is why your monthly installment stays fixed for the whole tenor regardless of what gold's market price does in between.
Antam's retail gold price closed at Rp2,627,000 per gram on 8 September 2026. Using that price and the fee structure above, here is what one gram actually costs under two different tenors. This is this article's own arithmetic, not a single published Pegadaian figure, shown so you can see where each rupiah comes from.
| Item | 12-month tenor | 36-month tenor |
|---|---|---|
| Gold price (the principal you're paying off) | Rp2,627,000 | Rp2,627,000 |
| Down payment (15%) | Rp394,050 | Rp394,050 |
| One-time admin fee | Rp50,000 | Rp50,000 |
| Mu'nah (0.92% of value per month) | ~Rp290,000 | ~Rp870,000 |
| Total paid for the gold | ~Rp2,967,000 | ~Rp3,547,000 |
| Extra cost over paying cash today | ~13% | ~35% |
The longer the tenor, the more mu'nah accumulates, because it is charged every single month you have not finished paying. A 36-month plan does not triple your monthly payment relief for free, it roughly triples how much extra you pay above the gold's actual price.
Banks offer a similar product under their own terms. Bank Syariah Indonesia's cicil emas, for example, normally requires a 20% down payment on gold bars and charges a murabahah margin of 9.75%, with tenors from 1 to 5 years. BSI has also run a 2026 promotion dropping the down payment to as low as 5% with the same margin. A lower margin percentage sounds cheaper than Pegadaian's 11.04% cap, but the two are not directly comparable without also checking the down payment size and whether an admin fee applies, since a lower DP means a larger amount is financed for longer. Always compare the full plan, not just the headline percentage.
For context, Bank Indonesia's own benchmark rate has sat at 5.75% since its August 2026 policy meeting, a rate you can check any time on NetWort's macro dashboard. Cicil emas's effective cost runs meaningfully above that, which makes sense: it is financing a purchase of gold, not a savings deposit, and it comes with the flexibility of a small down payment and a fixed, predictable installment.
If you can already afford the gold outright, cicil emas rarely makes sense. You would simply be paying an extra 13% to 35% to spread out a payment you did not need to spread out. Cicil emas earns its cost when the alternative is genuinely not buying gold at all this year, turning an inaccessible lump sum into a fixed monthly habit, similar in spirit to how digital gold apps let you start with a much smaller amount, just through a different fee structure.
Whichever way you buy gold, cicil emas, a digital app, or a lump sum, what matters for your own numbers is the price you actually paid, not the current headline price. Add your gold to NetWort's Holdings at your real cost basis, including any admin fee and mu'nah you have paid so far, so your portfolio shows what this gold has actually cost you, not just what a gram is quoted at today.
