It is the end of the month. Rent is due. A message pops up on your phone: "Cash Rp2,000,000 in 5 minutes. No papers. No checks."
It feels like a rescue. It is often a trap. This is the illegal online loan problem in Indonesia, called pinjol ilegal in Bahasa. Here is how to spot one before you tap "borrow".
An online loan (pinjol) is money you borrow through an app or website. Some are legal. The lender is licensed and watched by OJK, the Financial Services Authority.
An illegal one has no licence. Nobody checks how much it charges or how it collects. That is where the trouble starts.
Illegal lenders do not go away easily. Bisnis.com reported on 24 September 2026, citing Antara, that OJK had received 26,729 complaints about illegal online lending. The same report says Satgas PASTI, the joint task force against illegal finance, had shut down 951 illegal lending entities. Reports differ on which months that count covers, so treat it as a rough scale. A separate Bisnis report says operators can quickly switch app names, websites, phone numbers and accounts after a block. A shutdown does not always mean the lender is gone.
Here is a made-up example. These numbers are NetWort arithmetic for illustration, not a quote from any lender.
You ask to borrow Rp2,000,000 for 7 days. The app says it will take a 30% "admin fee" up front.
| Step | Amount |
|---|---|
| Loan on paper | Rp2,000,000 |
| Admin fee taken first (30%) | Rp600,000 |
| Cash that reaches you | Rp1,400,000 |
| You repay after 7 days | Rp2,000,000 |
| Extra you paid | Rp600,000 |
You paid Rp600,000 to hold Rp1,400,000 for one week. Divide: that is about 43% in 7 days.
Compare that with a paylater. Our post on the real yearly cost of paylater shows how even licensed credit adds up. An illegal loan can be far worse.
No single sign proves it. Several together should stop you. These come from OJK statements as reported by Antara, Bisnis and other outlets.
Do this before you share your ID or tap "agree".
Also check yourself. If you are unsure about your credit record, our guide to checking your SLIK OJK report shows where your borrowing history lives.
Stay calm. A threat is not a court order.
Most people reach for these apps in a cash crunch. The best defence is a small buffer. See how much to keep in our guide to emergency fund size by number of dependents.
If you already owe money, list every debt and pay them in a smart order. Our debt snowball vs avalanche test shows how.
Write down every debt you owe, including any app loans, and what you owe on each. A debt you do not count is a debt you cannot plan for.
Open your NetWort dashboard and see your net worth with those debts included. Once the number is in front of you, the next step gets clearer.
