Is Digital Gold Safe? What to Check Before You Buy Gold in an App

You open a gold app. You put in Rp10 juta. The screen says "5 grams". You cannot touch it, weigh it or see it.
So is digital gold safe? The honest answer is: it depends on the company behind the app. This guide shows you five checks that take about ten minutes.
Digital gold is a record in an app that says how many grams of gold you own. The app is meant to hold real gold somewhere to back that record.
That last part is the whole point. If the gold exists and is stored properly, your grams are real. If it does not, you own a number on a screen.
In Indonesia, trading of physical gold on a digital platform falls under Bappebti, the commodity futures regulator. The main rule is Bappebti Regulation 4/2019, and explainers on Regulation 3/2025 describe the current procedures for trading on a futures exchange. These are summaries, not the regulation text, so read the official rule if you need the exact wording.
Bappebti set a high bar for traders. Paid-in capital had to reach Rp100 miliar from 9 February 2022 (Bisnis.com). That number is a filter against tiny, thin companies.
Here is the catch. The licence belongs to a company, and the app brand can have a different name. Find the legal name in the app's terms, then look for it on the regulator's list of licensed traders.
Lists change. Bappebti's list had five names in January 2023 and six in October 2024 (DDTCNews, via search summary). Do not trust a blog list, including this one. Check the regulator's own page today.
One more note. In January 2026, OJK and Bappebti ended the transition that moved crypto supervision to OJK. The sources I found did not say digital gold moved too, and 2026 articles still describe Bappebti as its supervisor. Confirm this with both regulators before you rely on it.
Bappebti's rules say the gold traded must physically exist. It must be kept with a storage operator (a depository) approved by Bappebti.
So ask three plain questions:
An app that cannot answer these in its own terms has told you something.
This is the check most people skip. A bank deposit in rupiah is covered by LPS, the government deposit insurer, up to a limit. Gold is different.
LPS research director Seto Wardono said gold deposits are not among the deposits it guarantees, and in August 2025 LPS said bullion business was not yet in its scheme (CNBC Indonesia, 18 March and 5 August 2025). Pegadaian's own Tabungan Emas product summary also says it is not guaranteed by LPS.
Gold savings run by banks and by Pegadaian fall under a separate OJK rule for bullion, POJK 17/2024, issued on 14 November 2024. It covers gold savings, financing, trading and custody, and expects vault standards. That helps. It is still not deposit insurance.
For gold apps, the sources I found do not show any LPS cover. Read the product terms and look for the words "not guaranteed by LPS".
Even a safe app has a cost. The buy price is higher than the sell price. The gap is the spread.
Here is a made-up example, labelled as NetWort arithmetic. Say the app sells gold at Rp2.000.000 per gram and buys it back at Rp1.940.000. You buy 5 grams for Rp10.000.000. Sell them straight back and you get Rp9.700.000.
You lost Rp300.000, or 3%, with the gold price unchanged. The gold must rise about 3.1% just for you to break even.
Real spreads differ by app. Our digital gold app spread comparison shows real quotes, and physical vs digital gold compares the options.
Ask what happens when you want out:
Also remember that safe storage does not stop the price from moving. Gold fell about 23% from its January 2026 peak to 7 August 2026, in NetWort's calculation in our silver and gold volatility post. You can check the latest gold move on NetWort Market.
Do not put more in one app than you could stand to have stuck for months. Spread your gold across a licensed app and, if you wish, a physical bar. Keep your own record of grams, so you never depend on one screen to know what you own.
Write down what you own today. Open NetWort Holdings, choose "+ Add Metal", and enter your grams, the date and the price you paid. Note the app's name too. Then your gold sits next to your stocks and cash, and you can see how much of your wealth depends on one company.
