Silver Bar or Silver Coin? The Premium Over Spot Price Is Bigger Than Most Buyers Expect

An Antam silver bar sold for Rp43,150 a gram on 3 September 2026. A 1 troy ounce American Silver Eagle coin, the same weight in silver, sold for roughly Rp2.7 million to Rp2.9 million on Tokopedia the same week. That is not two different silver prices. It is the same metal, priced through two very different premiums over spot, and the gap between them is far bigger than most first-time buyers expect.
The spot price is the raw market price of silver itself, quoted per troy ounce (about 31.1 grams), with no fabrication, branding or dealer margin added. A premium is whatever you pay above that raw price to actually hold a physical bar or coin. Every physical silver product carries one. The question that matters is how big.
A bar's premium mostly covers refining and a dealer's margin. A coin's premium covers all of that plus the cost of minting a recognizable, government-backed shape, which is why coins almost always cost more per gram of actual silver than a bar of the same weight, everywhere in the world.
Antam, the state mining company, sells silver bars under its Logam Mulia brand in confirmed sizes of 250 grams and 500 grams, alongside its far better known gold bars. On 3 September 2026, Antam's silver sell price was Rp43,150 per gram, up Rp550 from Rp42,600 the day before (Liputan6, "Harga Perak Antam 3 September 2026 Naik Rp 550"). That price already includes Indonesia's 11% VAT, which applies to non-gold precious metals.
You can buy Antam silver directly through Logam Mulia's own outlets and site, through Pegadaian branches and the Pegadaian Digital app, or through Galeri 24, Pegadaian's own retail arm. IndoGold sells a comparable bar under its own "Perak SRH" brand. All of these are official, licensed channels with a published daily price.
There is no equivalent official retail channel for bullion coins in Indonesia. The American Silver Eagle, a 1 troy ounce, 99.9% silver coin minted by the US Mint, is the coin Indonesian buyers see most often, but it reaches them only through individual sellers on marketplaces like Tokopedia, each pricing their own stock. Listings for a 1 ounce Silver Eagle ran roughly Rp2.7 million to Rp2.9 million in the first days of September 2026.
Silver's spot price sat at $66.07 an ounce as of 2 September 2026 (JM Bullion), with Kitco and Trading Economics quoting the same day in a $64 to $66 range. Bank Indonesia's own mid exchange rate that week was Rp17,727 per US dollar (2 September 2026). Multiply the two and one troy ounce of raw silver was worth about Rp1,171,000, or roughly Rp37,650 per gram, before any dealer adds a premium.
Here is what each format actually cost above that raw value:
| Format | Price | Premium over spot value |
|---|---|---|
| Antam bar, ex-VAT (Rp43,150 ÷ 1.11) | ~Rp38,874/gram | ~3% |
| Antam bar, as sold (VAT included) | Rp43,150/gram | ~15% |
| American Silver Eagle coin, Tokopedia | Rp2.7M to Rp2.9M | ~130% to ~150% |
Strip out the 11% VAT that Antam's price already carries, and its bar sits only about 3% above the raw value of the silver inside it, close to the 4% to 10% bar premiums typically seen internationally, according to bullion price-comparison site bullionhunters.com's April 2026 dealer comparison. The Silver Eagle coin, at roughly Rp2.7 million to Rp2.9 million against a melt value of about Rp1,171,000, carries a premium several times larger than the 7% to 15% coin premiums that same comparison found among major US bullion dealers.
Coins cost more than bars everywhere, because minting a recognizable, government-backed coin costs more per gram than casting a plain bar, and that fixed cost is spread across a small amount of metal. But Indonesia's coin premium is not just "a bit more" than a bar's, the way it typically is in the US or Canada. It is several times wider, and the reason is structural rather than about the metal itself: bars move through an official, licensed, price-published channel (Logam Mulia, Pegadaian, Galeri 24), while coins do not. Every Silver Eagle sold here first has to be imported and then resold one at a time by individual marketplace sellers, each pricing in scarcity, import cost and their own margin, with no published reference price to compare against.
Antam's silver bars start at 250 grams, which at Rp43,150 a gram means a minimum outlay of roughly Rp10.8 million just to buy the smallest official bar. A single Silver Eagle coin costs a fraction of that, around Rp2.7 million to Rp2.9 million, even though it delivers far worse value per gram of silver. For a buyer with a smaller budget, that tradeoff, a much higher premium against a much lower minimum ticket, is often the real reason coins get chosen over bars, not any belief that coins are the better-value format.
Whichever format you hold, its rupiah value moves with the silver price every day, not just with whatever premium you paid at purchase. Add your silver holdings to NetWort at the price you actually paid, so your portfolio reflects the real premium you carry, not an assumed spot-equivalent value.
