Wedding Savings Plan in Indonesia: Where to Keep the Money So You Don't Have to Sell Your Investments

Say your wedding is in 24 months and you need Rp100,000,000. You also have some investments already. Do you sell them when the invoices arrive? Or do you leave them alone and build a separate fund?
This wedding savings plan answers that in plain steps. It covers how much to save each month and where to keep the money at each stage. For what a wedding costs, see our guide to wedding costs in Indonesia.
Most investments are built to grow over many years. A wedding is different. The date is fixed and the bill is fixed. You cannot wait for a better year.
That is the whole problem. Money you need on a set date should not sit somewhere that can fall 20% right before you need it.
So the simple rule is this: the closer the wedding, the safer the place you keep the money.
The numbers below are a made-up example from NetWort, not a forecast. Change them to fit your own wedding.
If you save Rp4,000,000 a month and earn nothing, you end with Rp96,000,000. Close, but short. A little interest helps fill the gap. We work that out next.
| Where the money sits | Yearly rate (assumed) | Value after 24 months at Rp4,000,000 a month |
|---|---|---|
| Under the mattress or a zero-interest account | 0% | Rp96,000,000 |
| A typical bank deposit | 2.5% | about Rp98,300,000 |
| A money market fund | 4% | about Rp99,800,000 |
The rates are examples, before tax and fees. The sums are NetWort arithmetic, with interest added monthly.
Look at the gap between the last two rows. It is only about Rp1,400,000 over two years. Chasing a higher return is not what makes or breaks a wedding fund. Saving the full monthly amount is.
Think of three stages. Each one matches how far away the wedding is.
Open a savings account just for the wedding. Do not mix it with daily spending. This is the idea behind a sinking fund, money set aside slowly for a cost you know is coming. We explain it in our guide to how a sinking fund works.
At this stage you may keep some of the fund in a money market fund. This is a type of mutual fund that holds short-term deposits and short-term debt. It is low risk, but not risk free, and its value can move a little.
Now the date is close. Keep the money in places where the value barely moves and you can withdraw fast. A bank deposit or a money market fund both fit.
If you use a time deposit, check the term. A deposit that ends after the wedding date is a trap, because breaking it early can cost you the interest.
Vendors ask for down payments and final payments. Keep the money where you can pay it in a day or two. No surprises.
Here is what we found when we checked on 23 October 2026:
So money market funds have paid more than bank deposits lately. But a fund is not covered by the LPS guarantee the way a bank deposit is. Think about which trade-off you are more comfortable with.
Here is the real fear. You have been investing for years. Now a big bill arrives. Do you sell?
Try a different order:
Why does this matter? Look at this made-up case. You hold Rp100,000,000 in stocks and plan to sell it for the wedding. If the market falls 30% in the last months, you can sell only Rp70,000,000 worth. You are Rp30,000,000 short, and you sold at the worst time. A fund in a safe place avoids that.
Only if your plan falls short. Check three things first:
All three are cheaper than selling investments at a bad time. And all three are cheaper than a wedding loan. Our wedding cost guide shows the maths on loans and paylater.
A plan only works if you check it. Add your wedding fund to NetWort's Holdings page, next to your investments. You will see how much is set aside for the wedding and how much is long-term money. That one view tells you whether you are on track without touching your portfolio.
