Side Income Tax in Indonesia: Why Your Rp2 Million Gig Can Cost More Than You Think

Dina earns Rp8,000,000 a month at her job. On the side, she designs logos for Rp2,000,000 a month. Her employer already takes tax out of her salary, so she assumes she is done.
She is not. The side money is taxed too, and it can be taxed at a higher rate than her salary. This guide covers side income tax in Indonesia: what counts, what to report, and when.
Indonesia taxes your total income for the year. Salary, freelance fees, small gigs: they all go into one pile.
The tax office (DJP) says the same in a public article on freelance income. Money that was never taxed at the source still has to be added in when you file your annual return, called the SPT Tahunan. That is the yearly form where you tell DJP what you earned. (pajak.go.id, read as a search summary on 23 October 2026.)
Here is the part people miss. A gig can look tiny alone and still change your tax bill when it sits on top of a salary.
Indonesian income tax is progressive. That means the rate goes up as your taxable income goes up. Only the slice inside each band gets the higher rate.
For individuals, the bands are 5% up to Rp60 million, 15% up to Rp250 million, 25% up to Rp500 million, 30% up to Rp5 billion and 35% above that. The first slice of income is also tax-free. For a single person with no dependents, that is PTKP (the tax-free allowance) of Rp54 million a year. (Ringkasan kewajiban perpajakan 2025, KKP, read as a search summary on 23 October 2026.)
Taxable income is what is left after the allowance. So the Rp54 million is subtracted first.
These numbers are made up by NetWort to show the mechanics. They ignore job cost deductions and BPJS contributions to keep the math easy. Your real bill will differ.
Step 1: salary only.
Step 2: add the side income.
| Salary only | Salary + side gig | |
|---|---|---|
| Taxable income | Rp42,000,000 | Rp66,000,000 |
| Tax | Rp2,100,000 | Rp3,900,000 |
| Extra tax | Rp1,800,000 |
The gig added Rp24,000,000 of income and Rp1,800,000 of tax. That is 7.5% of the gig, not the 5% she might expect. Why? Rp6,000,000 of it crossed the Rp60 million line and was taxed at 15%.
Some clients take tax out before they pay you. They should give you a withholding slip, called a bukti potong. Keep every one.
When you file, that tax is credited against what you owe. If the client withheld more than your final bill, you get the difference back. If less, you pay the rest. The detik.com explainer on freelance returns describes the same recalculation at the Article 17 rate, which can end in a shortfall or an overpayment (seen as a search summary, 23 October 2026).
Many small clients withhold nothing. That does not make the income tax-free. You still add it to your return.
A practical check: collect all slips and bank records for the year in January. Then match them to your list of gigs.
DJP requires individual taxpayers to file the SPT Tahunan within three months after the tax year ends, which means by 31 March. (Search summaries of DJP guidance, read 23 October 2026.)
Freelance income from outside your job is normally reported under business or independent work income. That usually means the 1770 form, not the simple employee form. The employer slip for your salary (form 1721-A1) covers the job only. (Pajakku and KlikPajak guides, read as search summaries.)
Late filing carries an administrative fine. DDTC, a tax news outlet, reports Rp100,000 for individuals under the KUP law. That article is from 2020 to 2021, so check the current amount with DJP before relying on it.
If you run the gig like a small business, you can choose how to calculate profit.
There is also a separate 0.5% rule for small businesses. It has recent changes and its own list of who can use it. Read who still qualifies for PPh Final UMKM before you assume it applies to you.
The simplest habit is to move a share of every side payment into a separate pot the day it arrives. Use your own estimate from the bracket math above, not a rule of thumb.
Irregular income makes this harder. How to budget an irregular income shows how to build a baseline from your lowest months.
If you also invest, remember that gains and dividends have their own reporting rules. See how to report stocks and crypto in your SPT.
Open the NetWort Dashboard and add your side income and your tax reserve next to your investments. You will see your real take-home picture in one place, so April does not surprise you.
